EasyRide is a transportation sharing system. Travellers use it to share transportations with others when they wish to go from one location to another.

This system helps to fully utilize the capacity of private transportation and hence reduces inefficient energy consumption and unnecessary emissions.

Detailed description (max. 500 words)
People have incentive to use private transportation because of the benefit of convenience and the desire of possession of goods. One of problems of using private transportation instead of public one is that we do not use most of vehicle capacity as we should thus consume too much energy individually. Ideally, public transportation is the most efficient way to reserve energy. However, for some populations it is hard to convince them to use public transportation because of all sort of inconvenient reasons, such as frequent stops and lengthy ride time.
EasyRide is a system that facilitates travellers to find drivers if they don’t have a car or passengers if they are driving. The basic idea is that travellers use a device equipped with a GPS system to locate people they need. For a driver, this device is able to allow him to input his departure and destination and the device can locate the passengers sending ride-request within a certain range of the distance or on the way to destination. For passengers, this device is able to allow him to input where he wants to go so that drivers matching the route are able to locate them.
There should be some rules for this system to work. First of all, there should exist some incentives for drivers to share their ride. Passengers pay drivers; however, it needs to be lower than what it costs to use a cab. How much should a passenger pay varies with the distance that is to be calculated by the system when a passenger sends a request. It should also vary with the quality of driver’s vehicle. The system should provide options for users to select certain type of the riders and drivers they feel comfortable with. At the end of the ride-sharing, both driver and riders assess the experience they perceive and this serves as a reference for future sharing request.
EasyRide targets at the middle class who wishes to enjoy some of convenience and also wants to save some transportation expense. The key for this system to succeed is the economics of scale; the more people using it, the more convenient and cheaper it will be.
EasyRide users pay membership fee or a fee from the occurrence of each transaction to EasyRide system provider. The capital is used to pay IT equipment and database maintenance.
This system is aiming to reduce the consumption of private transportation and use most of private vehicle capacity. The basic concept is summarized as the following
Problem: overconsumption of private cars in metropolitans because inconvenience of public transportation.
Solution: using a portable device equipped with GPS and Cloud system that can create an environment where people enjoy sharing ride between locations.
Concept: idle capacity is used when a driver travel from location A to B. When hitch-a-ride is easy and safe enough, demand for private transportation reduces.
Benefits: 1. Drivers: fuel cost sharing. 2. Passengers: time saving and no need to drive. 3. Community: energy saving.
