This futuristic conception provides a solution to current discussions about the grid and implements autonomous driving.

The smart grid of the future will be build close to the infrastructure such as high ways. This allows to build inductive lanes below the surface of the street to supply cars with electricity. Thus, the range of vehicles is increased drastically and batteries can be charged "on the fly". Small cars in urban areas may even completely relinquish batteries.

The smart infrastructure unlocks autonomous driving in a very obvious way. Cars can be directed by the infrastructure itself. Each lane knows where cars are and where they want to go. This way, a central infrastructure server decides where cars go to and who has right of way. The infrastructure may also identify capacity issues on the streets and redirect cars to other routes. Accidents and traffic jams will be prevented efficiently in this manner.

Even better, the infrastructure is a navigation system. It can determine the fastest way easily, because it knows the traffic situation everywhere. But also, car sharing will be as easy as never before. If anyone wants to share his or her car and there is someone looking for a lift on the route, the infrastructure can arrange for it. Moreover, public transport will become handy and dynamic. Instead of relying on trains, urban and suburban railways and buses on predefined routes, all the transport can be transferred to the street. The supply of public transport means will be arranged according to the demand with big or small buses, or cars.

Finally, smart infrastructure is a key feature of future energy supply. With a rising share of renewables, the infrastructure becomes a large buffer. When the supply margin is getting low, the infrastructure slows down cars and tells them to use battery energy or a combustion engine instead. If the cars can feed energy into the grid, they may even be used similar to micro power plants to support the grid.
