The Ecological Building Design System

The communication between all people, who are interacting together to form and use a building, is the key to achieve ecological building. That can be done by:

• Grouping people according to their functional contribution during building’s life cycle (like originators, executers, and Occupants).
• Linking the groups using an ecological cloud database.
• Controlling the group’s collaboration to minimize consumption.

Detailed description (max. 500 words)
Since life started on earth, humans have interacted with the surrounding environment and developed many approaches and tools to dominate nature and satisfy their daily life needs, safety, shelter and food. Hence, the human population exploded rapidly resulting in massive consumption and exhausting our resources (energy, water and raw materials).

Unfortunately, buildings we live in nowadays consume 30-40% of available resources yearly, and up to 50% of our primary energy. Add to this the fact that these buildings contribute with 45% to the climate emissions which have huge impact on our health. However, nowadays with the intelligent Information Technology, we have the ability to keep our harmony with the environment. How? Simply, by using Digital Ecological Language (DEL) and Eco-Cloud Database to control eco information exchange.

Digital Ecological Language (DEL): It is a communication method defined by measurable ecological parameters from energy, water and raw materials. DEL can be used to form Eco-Cloud Database to control the eco information exchange between contributors during the building’s life cycle.

In order to achieve sustainable buildings we have to think of it as a product by first defining all the contributors to the stages of its life cycle, and group them according to their functionality. After that, we use eco-cloud databases to link between these groups depending on ecological criteria (DEL). This Synchronized control is done over the entire life cycle of the building enabling us to monitor and evaluate the building in each stage.

Therefore, we can give them Regulated Ecological Label (REL) used as an indicator to measure the harmony between the building and the environment. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the tool to achieve the aforementioned communication system.

Generally, each building passes through many stages during its life cycle which starts from building’s design, construction and usage. And other stages: rehabilitation, renovation, re-use, and demolition (destruction). For every stage, there is a group based on its functionality and practical involvement:

• Originators (architects, designers, planners, engineers, etc.)
• Executers (constructors, building materials manufactures, contractors, engineers, etc.)
• Occupants (Users, inhabitants, public, maintenance contractors, etc.)

The cooperation and synchronization between these group frames should take into consideration not only ecological footprint values but also other surrounding environmental and local aspects like climate zones,
local natural resources, occupants’ habits and culture.

System Features:
- Facilitate communication between all the participants in the construction process.
- Evaluate the building environmentally in all stages of its life cycle.
- Evaluate the advantages of the building on its occupants and environment.
- Monitor energy needs and consumption by linking environmental information between buildings.
- Facilitate future maintenance operations by documenting all generated information.
- Control the use of local natural resources.
